Few people know that multi-colored corn grows in nature. People are used to the traditional color of the cob: yellow, orange. Interest in this colorful culture is moderate, but there is a growing trend. Exotic plants attract gardeners much more with their originality.


Colored corn is native to the state of Oklahoma in the United States. The Indians, the indigenous inhabitants of this region, have long cultivated this crop for food and livestock feed. Carl Burns, the owner of one of the farms in Oklahoma, was one of the first to grow multi-colored cobs. The type of corn that the Americans bred is called flint or Indian, and in Latin - Zea Mays indurate. It appears under another name: Glass Gem.

The grains are round in shape with a convex top, they are characterized by a smooth, glossy structure. The color of the grains in one cob is different:

  • white;
  • Orange;
  • yellow;
  • the black;
  • brown.

In seeds, most of the endosperm is hard, in the middle part it is loose, mealy. Colored maize has a high content of hard starch. The Americans called the grain crop maize, the name came from the ancient Maya.

Glass Gem has a high productivity, endurance, high aging rate. The production of this type of grain is engaged in all over the world, but it is most widespread on the territory of the American mainland. In the United States, Glass Gem is cultivated in the northern states.


The purpose of growing colorful maize species is grain. It is used for the production of cereals and flakes. Unripe seeds (milky ripeness) can be eaten, they are quite tasty and sweet. Maize, which may be of interest to summer residents:

Pink radiance is a super early variety, matures in 60 days. The height of the stems is in the region of 1.2 m. The shape of the ears is pyramidal, their maximum length does not exceed 15 cm. The color of the seeds is pink-lilac, the taste is sweet. They are used boiled. The yield of the variety is good.

Maize Mother of Pearl ripens in medium terms, it takes about 100 days from planting. Corn stalks reach 2.2 m in height. During the growing season, the plant forms round-pyramidal ears, reaching a length of 14 cm. The grain is lilac-white, round-elongated, mother-of-pearl. They are eaten boiled at the stage of milk ripeness, the ripe seeds are used as raw materials for the production of cereals.


Flint corn is the most common species found in various parts of the earth. The varieties of this species are grown for grain, almost all of them are early ripening.

Seed composition:

  • starch from 65 to 83%;
  • protein 18%;
  • fat from 3 to 7%.

Varieties of multicolored corn are suitable for popcorn production. Most varieties are used to produce flour, cereals, and are used as feed for pets.
